Home

The Hope and Anchor dates back to the 1690's, though a dwelling/tavern was probably on this site some years before records began.
It became the home of Jonathan Catherall I (1689-1761), a native of Ewloe and the chief founder of Buckley's famous brick and pottery industries. It fell to his grandson, then aged 16yrs,to expand the business. In 1786, with his mother Martha, they rented two potteries and lived as tenants at the Hope and Anchor public house. This was the site of the pottery with it's kiln and sheds that produced earthen- and stoneware.
In 1792 Jonathan Catherall II, a fervent Methodist, was granted, by the Bishop of Chester, a licence to use the Hope and Anchor as a place of public worship. The same year he married Catherine Jones and later their two daughter Martha and Catherine established the first school in Buckley.
In 1801 Jonathan Catherall II moved to the new house, Hawkesbury House, he had built to escape the fumes and stench of the firebrick works.
In more recent years, the Hope and Anchor became affectionately known as The Trap College and as an awld Buckley mon would say "thou knows nowt about 'owt 'til thou's been h'edjucated at the Trap College!"

The Trap Pool
The Trap Pool

Being so close to the Trap Pool of course, we are party to many a fishermans tale.We take an active interest in the Buckley Angling Associations activites and look forward to furthering our ties and lending our support to their pursuits in the future.
From the newly built 30ft decked terrace there are lovely lakeside views, where kingfishers, herons, greater crested grebe, canada geese and other bird and waterfowl can frequently be seen, whilst ramblers and amateur bird-spotters can also raise a glass or two of fine wine or cask-conditionaed ale.
Families are most welcome also and well-behaved accompanied children are allowed in the pub until 9pm. There are plans in the not-too-distant future, to introduce more children's entertainment.
